Teitl / TitleJustifying machine, North Wales Weekly News
Ddisgrifiad / DescriptionThis machine was used to print advertisements etc. and to make sure that all the lines are the same length by adding spaces between letters or words. The strip which the lady is pointing to then goes to the composition room. A paper with these advertisements (not laid out) is fed into another machine and within a matter of seconds it is photographed and justified on strips like the one shown. Once in the composition room, these strips are cut into pieces, i.e. the advertisements are separated and then they are fitted onto a graph which has been drawn out to show where the stories are to be fitted and therefore how much room is left on that page for advertisments. These advertisements have to be fitted carefully round the stories because each advertiser wants their advertisement to stand out.
The completed page then goes to readers who have to proof-read the pages to make sure that there are as few as possible mistakes in spelling etc.
Once this has been done, in previous years it would have gone to a typesetter. With computers it goes to the same men who used to do this and have adapted to new technology. They copy the pages onto a computer and this is fed through to the printing machines. The finished article is then to be found in every newsagent in the North Wales area.
