Ddisgrifiad / Description | In 1897 the application for authorisation was submitted to construct a total of 8 miles 25.45 chains of light railway, as one line, Colwyn Bay over Penrhyn Hill. The gauge proposed was 3 feet 6 inches with working by animal power or electricity. Estimated cost was just over £65,000. The date for completion was 2 May 1902 but with nothing begun, an extension was applied for in November 1901. On the 10 October 1903, the North Wales Chronicle announced that work on the Tramway was at long last under way; at the end of September 1903 a start had been made near Rhos on a reserved section about a 1,000 yards long. Thirty three men were engaged in filling in and raising the route of the trackbed to the required level, erecting fences and laying sleepers. Stone for the work was obtained from a nearby quarry. Nine men and eight carts were reported to be occupied in the work. On Saturday 19 October 1907 the line was finally opened to the general public.
On 14 September 1955 came the long awaited announcement that the Tramway was to close before the year was out. This was delayed until timetables were worked out and on 25 March 1956 the Llandudno and Colwyn Bay Electric Railway Company became a bus operator. The bus business took over many of the tram's old routes, in fact operating along most of the tram tracks.
