Ddisgrifiad / Description | The Great Orme Railway works on the cable system and was constructed during 1901and 1902. The lower section was open for traffic on 31 July 1902 and the upper section in the following year. The total length of the railway is 1 mile 9.24 chains. It starts from Victoria Station in Church Walks, goes up the middle of Old Road, along the side of Tygwyn Road, across the plateau formed by the top of the headland nearest to the town and round the side of the higher acclivity to the upper terminus, which is situated a short distance below the actual summit (679 feet above sea level). The height of the Upper Terminus is about 650 feet above sea level. The railway is divided into two sections by the Engine House which is built on the plateau about halfway between the Terminii. The gradient on the lower section average 1 in 6, the worst being 1 in 4.7 whilst the worst gradient in the upper section is only 1 in 8, the remainder comparatively easy. At the Engine House, there are two colliery type winding engines, a 120 H.P. for the lower section and a 60 H.P. for the upper section. They operate shafts on which are placed two drums, one for ascending and one for descending cars. The gauge of the line is 3 feet 6 inches and the rails used are of 50 lbs. The tram service is not working between October and the end of March.
