Ddisgrifiad / Description | Pilot whales, some up to 28 feet long, were seen off Deganwy. The longest which came ashore was 20 feet long. There were twenty-four in all beached. They were first seen at 10 a.m. on Thursday morning (31 August 1944). Zoologists from the University College of North Wales told a reporter that schools of pilot whales were occasionally to be seen off the North Wales coast and it was very rare for any to be stranded. The suggestion has been made that the whales became stranded because they adopt a follow my leader plan, and, in this way they get into shallow water and so get stranded.
