In 1873 a husband and wife team of 'Nigger Minstrels' provided open air entertainment using a bell tent as their dressing room. They were not the first; Mr. Rounds' Promenade Band played in the Happy Valley in 1872. The present theatre was built in 1933 to replace an earlier structure which had been destroyed by fire.
