Ddisgrifiad / Description | The Conwy River in Betws-y-Coed is crossed by Telford's Waterloo Bridge which originally had the official name of Llynnon Bridge. It has always been known as Y Bont Haearn, the Welsh for the Iron Bridge. It is a cast iron span of 105 feet. Its pierced spandrels are decorated with the Leek, Rose, Shamrock and Thistle Emblems. Its unique feature is the cast iron inscription running the full length of the span and duplicated on each side: 'This arch was constructed in the same year the Battle of Waterloo was fought'. The railings were damaged by car accidents downstream in 1966 and also by a U.S. Air Force petrol tanker which ended up in the river in 1952.
