Teitl / TitleHerbert Codman
Ddisgrifiad / DescriptionHerbert Codman was the second member of the Codman family to run the Punch and Judy Show in Llandudno, c. 1920.
In 1864, the Improvement Commissioners wasted no time in banning 'Punch and Judy, his dog and all that noisy paraphenalia belonging thereto'. However, Richard Codman successfully appealed against his banishment and there has been a Codman on the Llandudno waterfront ever since. This was Codman's first season. He was 33 and had arrived earlier that year in his Gypsy caravan, becoming stranded when his horse died. He carved puppets out of driftwood picked up on the beach, and obviously already knew the rudiments of the art of Punchinello. There is a family tradition that Charles Dickens modelled his Thomas Codlin, of the Old Curiosity Shop, 1841, on a Codman.
