Ddisgrifiad / Description | John Bright was a British radical politician born in Rochdale. He became famous when he joined forces with Richard Cobden in organising the Anti-Corn Law League. He entered the Commons as an M.P. for Durham in 1843. In 1864 John Bright, his wife Margaret and their five year old son Leonard visited Llandudno, staying in the St. George's Hotel. One afternoon whilst they were in St. Tudno's Churchyard Leonard said he would like to be buried there. His parents laughed at him then but that night he was ill, and he had died within a week. The child is buried in St. Tudno's and John Bright visited his grave at least once a year until his own death in 1889. He became a familiar figure in Llandudno, addressed public meetings and provided pensions out of his own income for some of the aged poor of the town. He laid the foundation stone of Lloyd Street School [now Conwy Archive] and gave his name to John Bright Grammar School.
