| Ddisgrifiad / Description | Glass photographic lantern slide showing the aftermath of the railway disaster that occured at Dwygyfylchi, close to Penmaenbach, on the evening of 12th January 1899. The accident occurred after the sea broke through the sea wall during heavy storms leading to the washing away of the track bed. A goods train travelling from Manchester to Holyhead caused the unsupported tracks to break leading to the engine and several trucks going into the sea, killing both the driver and fireman. The photograph, one of a series of three alongside CP96/4/17 and CP96/4/18, shows the engine, tender, and a truck on their sides among twisted rails on the beach. A large group of onlookers, mostly men but also including women and children, surround the wreckage and appear to be posing for the photographer. The image is possibly the work of W. G. Jones of Llandudno. |
