| Ddisgrifiad / Description | Glass photographic lantern slide showing Capel Salem, a Baptist chapel on Bryn Mynan Lane, Pentrefelin and Ty Capel, its attached manse. In the manse wall a memorial for the sculptor John Gibson, erroneously identifying the site as his birthplace, is visible at first-floor level: 'Yn y ty hwn yn 1789 (sic) y ganwyd John Gibson R. A. y mynor-cerfiwr enwog. Bu farw yn Rhufain Ion. 27 1866 yn 77 oed' ('In this house in 1789 the famous marble carver John Gibson was born. Died in Rome, Jan. 27. 1866 at 77 years of age'). John Gibson was actually born on the opposite bank of the Conwy river at Gyffin in 1790, though he lived at the manse in Pentrefelin from an early age. The chapel building itself also contains an inscribed stone: 'SALEM adeiladwyd 1786 Ail adeiladwyd 1841' recording the building and rebuilding of the chapel in 1786 and 1841 respectively. In the foreground of the photograph is a group of children, apparently unposed, and further along the lane is a horse-drawn cart driven by a man. |
