| Ddisgrifiad / Description | This collection contains 38 black and white photographs of the Hughes family, the Griffith family, and asssociated places. Agnes Twiston Hughes (1895 - 1981) was the first Welsh woman lawyer. She was born and raised in Conwy at Coed Celyn in Cadnant Park. After passing the Law Society Honours Examination in 1923, she worked at her father's law firm, J.W Hughes, which still exists today. She was principal partner from 1949 until her retirement in 1961. She also served as an alderman on Conwy Borough Council before becoming the first female mayor in 1954. She campaigned to save the Telford Bridge and aided its preservation by the National Trust. Photographs in this collection also feature her immediate family: her father, John William Hughes, her mother, Elizabeth Harriet Hughes (born Davies), and her sister, Evelyn Eleanor "Effie" Hughes. The Griffiths, cousins to the Hughes family, lived in nearby Llandyrnog. Joseph Griffiths (1881 - 1927) was first cousin to Elizabeth Harriet Hughes. Joseph Griffiths and his wife, Florence Worthington, had 5 daughters: Rosina Harriet Griffiths (1917 - 2000), Josephine Worthington Griffiths (1918 - 1999), Gwyneth Mary Griffiths (1920 - 2015), Glenys Florence Griffiths (1921 - 1985), and Margaret Joy Griffiths (1922 - 2007). Following the deaths of their parents, the 5 girls were partially cared for and supported by the Hughes family. Gwyneth Griffiths was married from the Hughes family home at Coed Celyn in 1946, and her daughter, Josephine Bennett, deposited this collection. |
