Teitl / TitleOAKWOOD PARK HOTEL, CONWY
Ddisgrifiad / DescriptionThis building was designed and built by James Stott and opened as an hotel in 1898. A golf course followed in 1906. Stott died in 1934 and the hotel was sold by auction in 1936. From 1939 - 1946 it was used as temporary accommodation by Rydal School [ though juniors stayed there until 1951]. During this time the golf course reverted to pastureland. The Welsh Regional Hospital Board used it as a hostel for people with 'mental deficiencies', but it was not suitable for full development and eventually the board sold it and moved to Bryn y Neuadd around 1972.
It was auctioned and purchased by 2 Cornish businessmen who decided to use it as a centre for the mentally handicapped. They sold off most of the surrounding land but did little else. It was taken over by the Moss family in 1982 who wanted to restore it as an hotel, but the venture foundered. The Bathers family took it over and converted it into a family home. When their company, Bathers Bakeries Ltd got into financial difficulties and went into administrative receivership the property fell into disrepair. It was restored in the early 2000s and is now private apartments.
This view shows the house from land which was once the golf course.
