Teitl / TitleST BENEDICT'S CHURCH, GYFFIN
Ddisgrifiad / DescriptionShowing detail of the painted ceiling. The Church of St Benedict was built by the monks of Aberconwy as a church for the villagers whilst St Mary & All Saints Church in Conwy was intended for the monks. St Benedicts has a memorial stone in the porch which reads: HIC IA[CE]T LYWELY [A]P IOR[…] which translates as ‘Here lies Lywelyn ap Iorwerth’ (Llewelyn Fawr). The churchyard originally had a round plan which can be seen from the north side of the church which tells the experts the churchyard is far older than the church itself, which is 12th century. There is a remarkable late fifteenth century painted chancel ceiling. The sixteen panels are covered with faded paintings of saints, full-length, in red, olive and grey, against a foliage background.
